In 2015, scientists in South Africa discovered a cache of ancient bones inside a cave known as the Rising Star. These turned out to be 15 individuals of a hominid species never before found by archaeologists.
Homo Naledi, Young Bones, Old Mysteries
Many more Homo naledi remains have been found in this inner chamber. Over 1,500 bones have been identified so far. There are so many of them in such a tight space that has some scientists believe it might be a burial chamber.
Still, many others in the scientific world are casting doubt on this theory. Homo naledi is nearly as primitive as a chimpanzee, according to research. Burial of the dead is a highly developed behavior that did not exist in modern humans until much later on. So more new data on the subject is still needed and should be forthcoming.
