With some 550 million users accessing Facebook Events each month, it’s clear that the social network has become a very important player in deciding how and where we spend our time.
According to a recent report from Facebook, more than 60 percent of interactions with events – signaling that you’re Interested or that you’re Going – happen right in the News Feed.
However, the tech company has a special feature for those extroverts who just can’t resist a good party: a new Featured Events list populated with prime social gatherings.
Now, instead of waiting to see where you’re friends are partying this Friday, you can be the one issuing the invitations.
Starting June 28, Facebook has enabled the Featured Events option for iOS smartphone users in 10 cities across the U.S. The feature has been added in the form of a carousel at the top of their list of upcoming events.
Facebook’s curators will hand pick the soirees by browsing through the music, entertainment, art, learning, family, fitness, community, food & drink, and sports events from each city.
According to Aditya Koolwal, product manager at Facebook Events, “You can think about it like a weekend or weekly digest of cool stuff that you can do in your city.”
And if we’re being honest, we all need a little inspiration from time to time. It can get pretty nauseating to look for the best music concert in a local café or the top-notch bohemian party of the weekend.
New York City, Washington, D.C., Boston, San Francisco, Chicago, Los Angeles, Dallas, Houston, Seattle, and Miami are the first cities that gained access to Featured Events. If the feedback is positive, Facebook is expected to prepare a wider rollout as well.
The new Events feature is more than the sections Suggested For You and Popular With Friends. Algorithmically surfacing social gatherings coming up soon in News Feed often highlighted events that were happening too soon.
With Featured Events, there’s a little more time to call the squad and attend the party (or concert, or any other event). Users who are highly engaged with this section of Facebook will also be alerted by a push notification that the jazz night they were Interested in is happening soon.
