Physical exercise done in moderation has a lot of beneficial effects on your body, from health to aesthetics. However, a new study has found that men who enjoy intense workouts may experience low levels of libido.
A team of researchers from the University of North Carolina has compared the sex drive of two groups of men, those who prefer to keep their training regimen light and those who enjoy intense workouts. The researchers discovered a major discrepancy between the libido of the two groups, as the latter group has lower levels of sex drive than the first.
Previous studies which researched the effects of physical exercise on libido were mainly focused on women. However, the recent study is the first one to focus on the relation of the two factors in men. According to the researchers, long and high-intensity workouts on a regular basis has a strong association with lower levels of sex drive in men.
Furthermore, based on their findings, the scientists recommend that doctors with patients suffering from sex-related disorders should take into account the levels of training practiced by the patient. The study involved around 1,100 participants, most of which were experienced athletes with a long history of training.
The participants were required to fill and online survey regarding their sex lives, how often they thought about it and engaged it. Another survey involved question regarding the participants’ exercise habits, the frequency, and intensity of their workouts. One last questionnaire involved the state of their general health and medical history.
After analyzing the data provided by the participants, the researchers were quick to determine the emerging pattern which showed that men with intense workouts had lower libido. However, the team of researchers led by Dr. Anthony Hackney was quick to recognize that the sample of participants was relatively small, and there was no way for researchers to gauge whether or not the men were honest about their answers.
Furthermore, the study published in the journal Medicine & science in Sports & Exercise did not research the cause of the association between low levels of libido and intense workouts. The researchers speculate that the cause is the low level of testosterone produced by the body after an intense training regimen.
