Tanning beds stand behind the increased skin cancer cases. Even though the people who suffer from melanoma account for only 2% of all the skin cancer patients, one person dies each hour because of it.
A study has revealed that nowadays the people who develop melanoma the most are the young people. The study gathered information from people with ages between 25 and 48 and the researchers discovered that the people who used tanning beds or sun beds when they were teenagers have increased risks of developing melanoma when they are still young.
The study was led by DeAnn Lazovich and the team of researchers from the University of Minnesota. They wanted to see if the melanoma cases for the people under 50 years old and the tanning beds were really linked. They discovered that the people who used tanning beds when they were in their 20s were six times more likely to develop skin cancer that would lead to death than the people who did not used the tanning beds to get tanned. Data for the research was collected from 681 people who were at some point or another diagnosed with skin cancer. This data was later compared with data collected from a control group.
Apparently, the women in their 30s are twice more likely to develop melanoma from tanning beds than the women who do not use them. Also, the women in their 40s are twice as likely to develop it. The women who were younger than 40 years old who were diagnosed with melanoma revealed that they started using tanning beds when they were only 16 years old. The women diagnosed with melanoma between 40 and 49 years old revealed that they started using tanning beds when they were 25 years old.
The researchers noticed that the women who were diagnosed at younger ages used the tanning beds more often than the women who were only diagnosed after they were 40. On an average, the young people diagnosed with melanoma had 100 tanning sessions and those diagnosed later had only 40 sessions.
The results of this study only come as a proof that the banning proposal of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration was right. The FDA proposed that the tanning beds should be banned for the people who are younger than 18 years old. Also, in 2009 the World Health Organization stated that the tanning beds could behind the increased skin cancer cases, as they are human carcinogens.
